About Us

What is Hillel?

Hillel is a foundation for Jewish Life on campuses across the world. There are chapters in over 550 American colleges and universities, where the opportunity to explore and celebrate one's Jewish identity is provided. Jewish student life at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, established more than 50 years ago, encourages the small but committed Big Orange Jewish Population to dedicate themselves to Jewish life, education, and Israel, all in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Nationwide, Hillel has had a major global impact on the future of the Jewish people. Hillel International, as well as the University of Tennessee encourages students to pursue tzedek (social justice), tikkun olam (repairing the world) Jewish learning, and to support Israel and global Jewish peoplehood.

Quick Facts about Hillel at the University of Tennessee:

  • Hillel is a campus recognized student organization.

  • Hillel serves UTK's undergraduate students, as well as involves our graduate students and faculty and staff to create a "home away from home."

  • We are proud to say that we make no claims about the “right” way to practice or not to practice Judaism. Our role is to help students explore Jewish life on their own terms as part of Judaism’s Great Conversation.

  • The University of Tennessee is the largest Jewish employer in the state of Tennessee.

  • While Hillel does not have a designated Hillel house, we offer many opportunities to connect with each other and others at various venues throughout the campus.

  • Hillel is lead by a Hillel Director, employed by the Knoxville Jewish Alliance, and a student executive board.

  • Hillel has a strong connection with surrounding Knoxville Jewish families, which provides students with a unique sense of community and inclusion.
